Are Low-Cost Private Schools Accessible and Equitable?

Introduces a novel method for classifying private schools by cost using household expenditure data, and examines how socioeconomic, demographic, and spatial factors drive school choice in Nigeria.

Impact: Low-cost private schools disproportionately exclude the poorest children — particularly in rural and northern Nigeria — and private enrollment is highest where public school availability is lowest, consistent with an excess demand model of school choice.

Methods & Approach: Uses the 2015 Nigeria Education Data Survey, applying a novel cost-classification method and multinomial logit models with separate estimations for urban and rural contexts across northern and southern Nigeria.

Language of instruction policy in Nigeria: Assessing implementation and literacy achievement in a multilingual environment

Evaluates adherence to Nigeria's Language of Instruction policy across school types, locations, and regions, and examines the relationship between language of instruction and literacy outcomes

Impact: Low adherence to mother-tongue instruction policies across Nigeria, combined with multilingual complexities, constrains learning outcomes.

Methods & Approach: Uses data from round 6 of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS6), applying multivariate regression analysis to examine adherence disparities and propensity score matching to estimate the effect of language of instruction on literacy outcomes.
